Frenchman's Bay Flats

Acadia National Park is one of my favorite places in the world. I grew up visiting my grandparents here in the summer and I've done my best to get back to Mt. Desert Island as often as I can.

When I was a kid, one of our rituals was to hike Cadillac Mountain via the South Ridge Trail. We'd usually hike during the day and I loved the effort-reward ratio of the hike. Within a mile or two the trail breaks out of the scrub and onto the rocks that make up the high ground of the park.

On my most recent trip, I woke up and left my campground at around 3:50AM. Given the early morning, I decided to drive up to the top of the mountain. It was the morning of the summer solstice so this was the earliest time for sunrise all year. I broke away from the crowds on top of the mountain and hiked around just below the summit. I was rewarded with a fantastic sunrise of glowing pinks and reds that were reflected in the still waters of the bay below.
